Apart from producing manure, a cow is a very important animal among the Basotho nation. It is used in many different ways such as to plough and plant crops in the field, paying lobola, and slaughtered for feats, ceremonies, thanksgiving and weddings. It is also slaughtered for funerals - for people to eat, but the hide is used as a blanket for the deceased with a belief that a person is going to get cold, so he/she needs something to put on - a blanket.
